We, TSKF along with 9 other volunteers rescued this poor dog taking over 4 hours who has been abandoned by his owner and suffered on the streets for more than 8 weeks. He was in an excruciating pain and trauma for him to trust us but finally we got him and he's under medical care. Initial diagnosis revealed that one side of his hip was slightly dislocated, one of his eyes is heavily ulcerated with inflammation. But, anatomically his bones are intact.
This is Ponga. She was seen on an uninhabited island in the Kerela waterways whilst Sharon and Henrik were on a boating holiday in 2023. She was a lively little pup about 6 weeks old. But she could not use her back legs properly and we were concerned that she would starve to death once her mother stopped feeding her. According to the boatmen, her sibling had already drowned. We asked Raja to arrange for someone to drive from Tamil Nadu, many hundreds of miles away, to contact the boatmen and to rescue the puppy. She passed her rabies titre test through a blood sample sent to an approved German laboratory and after the requisite 3 month wait, she was allowed to fly from Chennai to Heathrow where she was put in a warm coat and promptly feel asleep. She is now living in Poland with her new family, close friends of the Bierer-Nielsens who feel in love with her. Ponga has learnt to love the snow! It was very hard indeed to give her up as she had settled down well in London but she is living as good a life as any dog.
Laura Bierer-Nielsen found a puppy in very poor condition on the streets of Pudhukottai district in Tamil Nadu in April 2022. She called various organisations that referred to themselves as charities and asked them to come and collect the puppy. She offered to pay for the treatment etc. None responded except one exceptional young man, Raja Shahul Hameedh from Madurai.
Raja travelled 150 kms on a scooter and took back a puppy that he then cared for in his home. Laura only paid the expenses. Raja had already decided to dedicate his life to stray animals in his hometown of Madurai and had applied for non governmental (NGO) status for his small organisation, since granted in 2022.
